  CHALLENGE
 
  • Help Wal-Mart navigate the new store siting process throughout Ohio, especially where significant, organized opposition develops.
  • Assist Wal-Mart in building better relationships with elected officials and the media statewide.
  • Convince local elected officials to approve zoning changes, site plans, road improvements and architectural designs for new stores.
  APPROACH
 
  • Develop in-depth understanding of communities targeted for expansion and their opinion leaders.
  • Work with developer and local officials – both elected officials and staff – to resolve key issues.
  • Provide media relations support for specific projects, including conducting editorial board meetings and providing support at public meetings.
  • Monitor opponents' activities online, in the media and in person.
  • Manage campaign activities for ballot issues.
  RESULTS
 
  • Oberlin Planning Commission approved the site plan and design for a Wal-Mart Supercenter; store opened in Fall 2006.
  • Construction underway for the first-ever Wal-Mart Supercenter in Cleveland.
  • Successful sitings in numerous communities throughout Ohio.
  • Partnerships developed with various community organizations.
