  PROJECT DAWN

Project Dawn aimed to improve community understanding of mentally retarded and developmentally disabled people so that they could mainstream into community life. Edward Howard worked with the Summit County Association for Retarded Citizens to make it happen.

Media materials were prepared to help dispel long-held myths about mental retardation. Media visits were made to better tailor story ideas for producers and editors. Using focus groups for input, public service announcements were produced.

Mentally handicapped people served as their own spokespeople and told their own stories on radio, TV and print. PSAs received extensive airplay. A state workshop of professionals in developmental disability was assembled to review the experience and share materials with other communities eager to roll out the program.
