HOW AN AGGRESSIVE INFORMATION CAMPAIGN HELPED
OHIO'S STATE TEACHERS RETIREMENT SYSTEM RETAIN MEMBERSHIP

The highly regarded nonprofit State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) of Ohio faced a $1 billion challenge – competition. New legislation allowed for-profit alternative retirement plans to solicit higher education STRS members, setting the stage for potential expansion to all STRS members. Other state systems did not actively counter this new challenge and lost 90% of enrollers. STRS mounted an aggressive and comprehensive communication effort to stress the valuable benefits of STRS membership and retained more than half of those making a choice. Legislation to extend choice to all STRS members was blocked. STRS also preserved its reputation as a premier member service organization.
