COMMUNITY SHELTER BOARD:
BUILDING A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY TO END HOMELESSNESS
Economic development in downtown Columbus, Ohio, threatened to displace homeless men. The Community Shelter Board proposed a visionary plan that would do more than relocate people; it would rebuild lives. The plan called for an integrated social services system along with housing homeless men in 800 apartments in virtually every neighborhood. A community relations program, emphasizing open and honest discussion of this controversial approach, incorporated funder relations, media relations and neighborhood outreach. The program succeeded in building community acceptance of this pioneering effort: today nearly 100 apartments are open – with more under construction – standing side-by-side with traditional housing.
