BARBERTON CITIZENS HOSPITAL: KEEP BARBERTON HEALTHY
Barberton Citizens Hospital needed to expand its facilities to provide additional services and improve existing services. The hospital was landlocked and hoped to purchase eight acres of adjacent parkland for the expansion. However, Barberton's City Charter requires two-thirds majority approval to transfer parkland, so the issue was placed on the ballot. The Hospital, working with Edward Howard, used an aggressive grassroots communications campaign to counter organized opposition and win the vote. The result? An unusually high number of voters went to the polls and an overwhelming 77% approved the sale of parkland to the Hospital.
